You may be playing a dangerous game trying to numb your pain. Some of the most commonly used pain medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can cause potentially serious side effects. (NSAIDs include aspirin and drugs containing Ibuprofen or Naproxen.) According to the Annals of Internal Medicine, a new survey shows nearly half of the 175 million adults in North America who use NSAIDs exceed the recommended dosage, and few are aware of the potential risks. Researchers say 16,500 people die and 103,000 are hospitalized each year because of NSAID-related problems. Painkillers Slow Healing Process - Experts at Boston University Medical Center, report in New Scientist that some painkillers may slow or block the healing process. It has long been known that some NSAIDs such as ibuprofen and indomethacin can delay healing. This new study has found that rofecoxib (Vioxx) and celecoxib (Celebrex), can also delay the healing process - and actually block it - in laboratory rats. These new drugs inhibit the cox-2 enzyme, which appears to be crucial in bone formation and regeneration. Experience significant deceases in pain symptoms and gain more vibrant health with regular activity - even if you suffer from chronic pain. According to a report in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, activities such as walking, gardening, swimming and bicycling actually reduce joint and muscle pain.
